Peer Recovery Specialists are bound by a code of ethics that emphasizes respect, confidentiality, and ethical conduct in their relationships with individuals in recovery. They must uphold integrity, maintain boundaries, and promote the well-being of those they serve.

Peers will encounter situations in their client relationships where they must make ethical decisions–a process where people evaluate and choose actions based on ethical principles, integrity, and fairness. It involves gathering facts, identifying problems, and determining if ethical, legal, or other issues are involved. Responsible ethical behavior by peers helps build trust, transparency, respect and professionalism in relationships.

Ethical responsibility is a major domain of study for certification. Become familiar with IC&RC standards and MABPCB’s Code of Conduct.

“Peer Recovery professionals have a responsibility to support persons seeking/in recovery with achieving their personal recovery goals by promoting self-determination, personal responsibility, and the empowerment inherent in self-directed recovery.” — MABPCB
